unifying two structures

This project incorporates an arts collective and a bike repair shop in an equally dissimilar structure, which is the result of a triangular cinderblock addition to a cylindrical former gas-supply building from the 1860's.

The design of the space explores how to merge these two buildings and two very different needs through the use of an encapsulated structure that lives entirely within the existing building.  The intention was to create a space that would not be apparent from the outside, but would be a world of its own within.  By studying how beehives can sheath themselves within the nooks and crannies of existing structures, I developed a floor plan based on sinewy plywood forms that adapt as they flow through the space to serve as storage, furniture, tools, and divisions between spaces.
