A cancer hospital sought to create an innovation lab to introduce patients to new technology and service models that were designed to improve the patient experience. The space would sit adjacent to a patient waiting room, with the intention that patients would visit the lab while waiting for their next appointment. After interviewing patients and discussing the needs of the space with doctors and administrators, I proposed an open, inviting and flexible space that could be adapted to prototype new services and those not yet developed. The plan would incorporate modular furniture that would be adaptable to one-on-one sessions or larger groups. In addition to this, there would be removable bar seating for computers as well as storage space for any unneeded equipment. Perhaps the most impactful component of the design was the replacement of the drywall separating the innovation lab from the patient waiting room with glass. This created a more welcoming space, which has encouraged patients to engage with the space and the new services being prototyped.
