Through the exploration of southern vernacular architecture, I developed a system of common building blocks that appear in vernacular home structures. These include private space, a connection to outdoor space, a porch, a sacred space and a hearth, among others. The graphic blocks below illustrate these concepts and were used to inform my design of a home that sought to relate to the existing structures surrounding it.
